High School Program Elements

Each arc High School program is customized to fit the needs of its school and community. That said, there are a few elements proven to increase student engagement and success.

Leadership Council

One trademark of all arc high school programs is the Leadership Council. The Leadership Council students design and drive the program under the mentorship of highly trained arc Site Coordinators and staff.

Highlights include:

  • Weekly meetings
  • Student-led peer outreach and awareness campaigns for such important issues as smoking cessation and distracted driving
  • Bi-annual Leadership Congress retreats, where all students involved in a Leadership Council at an arc school come together for teambuilding exercises, life skills training, and experiential outdoor education.

At many locations, Leadership Council students also participate in the G.O.A.L.S. program.

G.O.A.L.S. Program

The Great Outdoor Adventure Leadership Series (G.O.A.L.S.) is arc's signature leadership development and life skills training program for middle and high school youth.

Intended for middle and high school students, G.O.A.L.S. students follow an innovative leadership development curriculum during weekly Leadership Council sessions, and participate in periodic outdoor adventure trips to engage in teambuilding and life skill building exercises in the context of some of Southern California's most stunning landscapes.

Drop-In Center

The arc Drop-In Center serves as a hub for programs at the school, but more importantly, creates a safe place for youth to spend time outside of school hours.

All arc high school programs have a dedicated space on the school campus. Although in some cases that space is mobile, for most schools, a specific room serves as the Drop-In Center. Highlights of Drop-In Center programming may include:

  • Homework help before and after school
  • Leadership Council meetings
  • Canned food and clothing drives
  • Events such as movie night or open mic night
  • Club hosting

Arts Enrichment

arc maintains a strong arts curriculum at all our schools.

Students learn about many various art forms and develop their chosen craft in  clubs and enrichment classes. They have opportunities to showcase their creativity to their peers with open mic events and talent shows. Offerings may include:

  • Spoken word
  • Urban art
  • Dance
  • Film
  • Photography
  • Creative Writing

...and much more!

WOW Events

School and after school providers capitalize on the success of our G.O.A.L.S. Club in developing student leaders by contracting us to provide the WOW Factor! for their programs.

Weekly, monthly or annual workshops designed to train young people using adventure sports such as rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, skate boarding and camping serve as a forum for discussing current teen issues, giving young leaders concrete skills and teaching them to use their voice for positive social change.

Special events and school wide activities are also part of the package arc delivers.

As part of a comprehensive approach, we design and facilitate:

  • 8th grade orientations
  • weekend movie nights
  • dances
  • camping trips focused on leadership skills
  • family picnics
  • anti-violence and anti-smoking events

...and so much more.
